Cazenove Architects has created a dynamic new learning centre in the shell of
the old Forest Gate Library. By grafting a side extension to the existing
building the character of the former municipal building has been transformed.
The sinuous curved form of the extruded copper clad addition contrasts
with the angularity of the 1960Õs housing block. Internally the space
creates an inclusive and inspiring open learning zone which complements
the formality of the more traditional classrooms located in the shell of
the old library. The Ground floor entrance and reception area have been
reformed
to create a visible and welcoming landmark on the high street.
The Old Public Library was forced to re-locate because it could not achieve full accessibility, and suffered from severe environmental problems including poor ventilation, lack of acoustic control and over heating.
The new learning Centre has overcome these problems by introducing lift access and a modulated natural ventilation system that cools the spaces without the need to open windows onto the noisy high street.
