William Patten Primary School has commissioned Cazenove Architects to develop a strategic plan for development for both the buildings and the playgrounds that can be implemented over the next 10 - 15 years.
The existing building is a classic 1890's London Board School built at a time of unparalleled investment in education provision following the 1870's Education Reform Act. British Metropolitan centers have many fine examples if these buildings, though too many of them have been converted into luxury apartments. Part of our project is to demonstrate how these fine buildings can be adapted to suit the changing requirements of the learning environment. In many ways they are suited to contemporary education than new schools where space and budget constraints would make it impossible to create such high celinged halls with classrooms arranged on the periphery.
At present the building sits in a sea of tarmac. Cazenove has developed proposals for the playground which breaks down the seperation between internal and external spaces. High cilled windows will be opened up tp create large ceilings onto flowing terraces.
A new entrance block facing the High Street will offer community and extended Schools Facilities as well as creating a new and welcoming connection between the school and its community.
