East London Childcare Institute

The central reception and entrance area of the building creates a three storey high atrium, around which stairs, rooms and social hubs are arranged. Light and air fill the space from both sides. The third floor of the building is open plan, designed as a study centre for key and basic skills. The large space has been divided by a series of permeable screens into smaller study and teaching areas, allowing large group, small group and individual study though various arrangements of desks and furniture. Roof lights define each area and bring light and air into the space. The study centre has become a dynamic and creative centre for further education and training in East London.

The structure of the building is concrete frame with insulated block and Sto render finish. The shallow floor plate of the building enables cross flow ventilation with day light levels controlled by louvres and shading on the southern façade.

The striking success of the nursery and training spaces have empowered all those involved, whether student, staff, parent or carer and most importantly, the children in the positive and aspirational environment now created.
