The client's brief called for on site residential accommodation for the main practitioner in an East London medical centre.
The building has a separate character whilst remaining connected to the existing medical facility, which it serves. The new annex is raised above ground level in order to accommodate the planning requirement to retain on site parking for the medical centre.
The main accommodation on the first floor is laid out as open plan with sliding partitions allowing varying degrees of openness between spaces and to the external balcony.
The distinctive zinc-clad roof shape allows high level ventilation through the clerestory in the upper lobby, providing a simple means of ventilating the whole building. The new building in filled a previously straggly void in the streetscape and provides some playful contrast to the late 20th century developments adjoining the site.
